Homs sits where the country's main roads cross, and its daily rental market reflects that more than it reflects tourism. Two quite different demands run through it: short stays by people passing through or in the city for work, and summer stays in the countryside west of the city, where the hills and the valley have drawn people for generations. They want different properties, and confusing them is the usual reason a booking disappoints.
| In the city | The western countryside and valley | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical stay | One to three nights | A weekend to several weeks |
| Who books it | Individuals, couples, people travelling for work | Families and groups |
| What decides the choice | Location, parking, how quickly you can get in and out | Outdoor space, view, privacy, how many it truly sleeps |
| Seasonality | Fairly flat through the year | Sharply seasonal β book weeks ahead in summer |
| Room to negotiate | Some, especially midweek | Little in season, considerable outside it |
For a short stay, three things decide whether it works, and none of them is the photographs.
Ask about electricity and water and what backup exists. It's the question that most changes a short stay and the one people least often ask, because it doesn't appear in any photograph.
Out towards the hills and the valley the criteria change entirely. What you are buying is the setting and the outdoor space, and the failures are practical rather than aesthetic:
Listing photographs are often taken at the property's best moment: the garden green, the pool full, the light right. Ask for recent pictures of every room and of the outdoor space, and if the stay depends on something specific β a pool, a heater, a covered seating area β ask for that photographed as it is today. A serious owner sends them. The request itself is informative.
See our guide to booking through the site for how a confirmed booking is meant to work, and our guide to avoiding scams if anything about the arrangement gives you pause β most notably a request to pay in full, off-platform, to hold a date.

Decide first which of the two markets you're in. In the city, ask about the area by name, parking and arrival times. In the countryside, ask about the road, real bed count, water, electricity and heating before anything else. Ask for photographs taken now, and put the dates, the total, the deposit and the cancellation terms in writing before any money moves.
They are two markets. In the city, stays of one to three nights by individuals and people travelling for work, decided by location, parking and arrival times. In the western countryside, stays from a weekend to several weeks by families and groups, decided by outdoor space, privacy and real sleeping capacity β and sharply seasonal.
The road to the door: whether it is paved the whole way, and what an ordinary car will manage. This is the first question rather than the last, because some locations involve partly unpaved access and discovering that on arrival is too late.
The area by name rather than "central"; parking, and whether it is a space of your own or on the street; check-in and check-out times and whether a late arrival is possible; and the electricity and water situation and what backup exists β the question people least often ask, because it appears in no photograph.
Ask for recent pictures of every room and of the outdoor space, and if the stay depends on something specific β a pool, a heater, a covered seating area β ask for that photographed as it is today. A serious owner sends them, and the request itself is informative.
The exact dates and the check-in and check-out times; the total price and what it includes, such as cleaning, gas and water; the number of people the price covers and the cost of an extra guest; the deposit, the condition for its return and when it is returned; and the cancellation policy in both directions.
